The Dog House: Dog Breeds

Hot Dogs
"Hot dog" is an American term applied to a variety of cylindrical, sausage-like meats. Hot dogs can be made of anything: chicken, beef, veal, pork, turkey, soy, and even grains. The standard American hot dog is 6 inches long and weighs about 2 ounces. Hot dogs are normally served on buns with a variety of toppings, the most common of which are mustard, ketchup, relish, onions, saurkraut, chili, and cheese.

In America, "meat" hot dogs generally contain a variety of meats and poultry, while those labeled "All Beef" must contain only beef. In addition, hot dogs labeled "chicken" or "turkey" contain just chicken or turkey. Kosher hot dogs are all beef, and usually heavily seasoned with garlic. Hot dogs may also contain soy or other non-meat fillers.

Vegetarian hot dogs are a low-fat alternative to meat hot dogs, which may contain 75 percent or more calories from fat. Only about 15 to 20 percent of the vegetarian hot dog's calories come from fat. In addition, they contain only about two-thirds the calories of a regular 2-oz. meat hot dog. Vegetarian hot dogs can contain a variety of ingredients, such as wheat, corn, flour, mushrooms, carrots, peppers, onions, and soy products.

Frankfurters
Frankfurters are made from a combination of meats and may contain up to 3½ percent fillers.

Hot Dog Styles

Corn Dogs
Corn dogs were created in 1942 by Neil Fletcher for the Texas State Fair. Corn dogs are hot dogs or other sausage, dipped in a heavy cornmeal batter, then deep fried in hot oil. Corn dogs are served on sticks for easy handling and eating. The usual garnish is mustard, although ketchup is widely used as well. Corn dogs can also be served with cheese, either with the cheese first wrapped around the dog before dipping in the cornmeal, or with a slice of cheese laid on top of the hot corn dog. However, using commercial cheese dogs--those with the cheese built into the dogs--works best.

Pigs in a Blanket
Pigs in a Blanket are hot dogs wrapped in biscuit dough or pastry and baked.

Coney Island dogs
Coney Island dogs are topped with a spicy meat mixture.

Chicago dogs
Chicago dogs are topped with mustard, relish, chopped raw onions, and tomato slices.

New York City dogs
New York City dogs are topped with mustard and steamed onions.

Kansas City dogs
Kansas City dogs are topped with sauerkraut and melted Swiss cheese.

Tex-Mex dogs
Tex-Mex dogs are topped with salsa, cheese, and chopped jalepeños.
